October 2009: Thomas Tuft served as co-chair of the annual conference of the Minnesota Chapter of the American of Matrimonial Lawyers along with Susan Rhode of Moss & Barnett. The event was held October 1-3 at Breezy Point Resort. The conference, called Divorce Camp, brings together professionals involved in all aspects of family law, including judges, lawyers, psychologists, and financial experts. Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court Eric Magnuson was the keynote speaker.
This year's conference focused on improving the rules of family court procedure. The last significant change to the rules occurred fifteen years ago. Since then, there have been changes in the structure of families, technology available for use in family law matters, changes in procedures available for resolution, and a reduction in resources available to families and the courts due to the current economic circumstances. Event planners brought together judges, court administrators, and members of the rules committee from across Minnesota to offer feedback on the existing rules and propose changes. The revised rules will be presented for consideration in the normal rule-making process. |
